Reserve Mounted Unit, 40-hour POST Certified Mounted Patrol School
Carson City Sheriff Department Mounted Unit will be hosting a Police Officer Standardized Training (POST) certified Mounted Patrol School This school will be a Basic Course of instruction emphasizing sensory training, crowd control, formation riding, escort procedures, arrest, search for evidence and related situations.
The school is designed for full time law enforcement, reserve officers, and mounted search and rescue units that work in conjunction with local law enforcement. Participants MUST be experienced riders and have approval from their departments to participate in the school. Horses that have not participated in a previous school or started horses will be accepted and encouraged.
There will be 30 openings for the school. All Carson City Sheriff Mounted and Reserve Deputies must participate. There will be no cost for Carson City Sheriff Mounted and Reserve Deputies. Tuition for other participants will be $150.00 with the funds being donated to the Carson City Sheriff Department Reserve Mounted Unit.

Course Write Up
The POST certified course was held by the Carson City Sheriff Department at the Carson City Fairgrounds just off hwy 395 south and hwy 50 west.
Instructors Tom Casey, Joe Bruno, and Vinnie Pirozzi introduced 31 students to mounted police basics including tack inspection, ground manners, formation riding, sensory training, and mounted police arrest techniques.
Ten of the students were from the San Mateo County MSAR. The remaining students were mounted officers from Douglas County, Reno and Carson City. All of the students passed the course sucessfully. The 5-day course was highlighted by a 5-mile trot through a portion of Lahontan State Park, and a final ride through the streets of Carson City.
Entertainment included an evening at a local sports bar, Bully's, and an outstanding barbeque grilled up by instructor Joe Bruno. Additional instruction was provided by guests Dr. Mason, DVM., and professional trainer Richard Winters.
