Basic Mounted SAR Training

Held annually in the spring at Driscoll Ranch, La Honda

Course Objective

Participants learn and physically participate in learning to use the horse for mounted patrol activities. Formation riding, basic crowd control, sensory training, proper riding techniques, search skills for evidence and lost persons and grid searches from horseback are core activities of the course. Students also conduct a mock search over typical search terrain.

Students learn to properly tack a horse for riding in adverse conditions and mounted street patrol. Emphasis is placed on exposing both the horse and rider to sensory extremes with SAFETY being essential.

Instructors: Taught by Don Criswell, a Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified instructor and co-founder and former head trainer of the San Jose Mounted Enforcement Unit along with Casey Terribilini, POST certified instructor and unit leader of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Mounted Search and Rescue Unit.
